Lubaina Himid (b. 1954, Zanzibar) shows “Presenting History: Testing Translation” at The British Pavilion as part of the 61st International Art Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia. Initially trained in theatre design, Himid is recognized for her innovative painting techniques and social engagement. Blending theatre and opera influences, Himid creates scenes that invite imagination, engage the senses, resist simple answers, and provoke reflection. She believes art can reshape our understanding of the world and our place in it. She has played a key role in the UK since the 1980s through her work in the British Black arts movement, creating opportunities for Black expression and women’s creativity. Over the past decade, her figurative paintings have gained international acclaim for highlighting overlooked aspects of history and daily life. In 2017, she won the Turner Prize, and in 2018, she was awarded a CBE for her contributions to the arts.
