On May 27, King Felipe and Queen Letizia presided over the solemn ceremony awarding the Gold Medals of Merit in the Fine Arts for 2024. The event took place at the Teatro de Rojas in Toledo, and alongside the monarch and his wife, the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, the President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, and the city’s mayor, Carlos Velázquez, were present. Organized by the Ministry of Culture, the event honored the work of 38 individuals and institutions in the fields of performing arts and music.
The Gold Medal of Merit in the Fine Arts is an award that recognizes individuals and entities who have distinguished themselves in the field of artistic and cultural creation, or who have provided notable services in promoting, developing, or disseminating art and culture, or in preserving artistic heritage. Until 1995, it was awarded annually in gold and silver categories, but since 1996, it has been awarded only in gold.
Among those also recognized within the fields of fine arts and cultural heritage were photographer and visual artist Cristina de Middel; cultural heritage expert architect Ángel Luis de Sousa Seibane; the artistic collective Cabello/Carceller; and Segundo Castro Olmo, a member of the Colectivo Estampa Popular.
