The Government of Guatemala has officially appointed Emiliano Valdés Melendreras as Deputy Minister of Culture, as part of a broader restructuring of the executive branch.
Valdés is a curator, researcher, and cultural manager with international experience in the field of contemporary art. His work has been characterized by an interdisciplinary approach that connects art with design, craftsmanship, and communities, while also promoting collaborative practices and cultural research processes.
With more than twenty years of experience, he has developed projects aimed at expanding traditional frameworks of art and integrating ancestral knowledge into contemporary practices. His work has also been closely linked to knowledge production and the development of cultural initiatives with social impact.
At the institutional level, he has held significant positions in international cultural organizations. Notably, he served as Chief Curator at the Museum of Modern Art of Medellín, where he promoted the visibility of Indigenous, textile, and community-based practices, while also strengthening the relationship between cultural institutions and their social contexts.
