El Museo del Barrio in New York is hosting Sophie Rivera: Double Exposures, an exhibition that examines the career and legacy of Puerto Rican-American photographer Sophie Rivera (1938–2021). The show brings together portraits, documentary photographs, experimental self-portraits, and images of New York City’s urban scene from the late 1970s, including archival materials that have never previously been exhibited.
The exhibition highlights Rivera’s contribution to photography and to the representation of Latino communities, particularly within the Nuyorican cultural movement. Throughout her career, she explored themes of identity, belonging, and social visibility, shaped by her experience as a Puerto Rican woman living in New York.
As part of the project, the first comprehensive monograph on the photographer will also be published in collaboration with Aperture. The volume will include more than 125 images, writings by Rivera, and essays by various specialists.
The exhibition Sophie Rivera: Double Exposures will remain on view until August 2, 2026.
