The Fundação Bienal de São Paulo announced that Brazilian curators Amanda Carneiro and Raphael Fonseca will lead the curatorial direction of the 37th edition of the São Paulo Biennial, scheduled for 2027 at the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion, located in Ibirapuera Park.
The selection of both curators marks a return to an artistic direction led by Brazilian professionals, within a strategy of the foundation that in recent years has alternated between national and international curatorial models. According to the institution’s president, Andrea Pinheiro, the decision is the result of a collective selection process that valued experience, international projection, and the ability to engage in dialogue with the contemporary art context.
Currently, Amanda Carneiro works as a curator at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) and participated in the artistic organization of the 2024 Venice Biennale. Meanwhile, Raphael Fonseca develops projects in institutions in Portugal and the United States, and is also involved in international initiatives related to contemporary art.
The institution stated that in the coming months it will release more details about the curatorial proposal and the rest of the team responsible for the 2027 edition.
