Description

The Museum of Cultures in Basel (German Museum der Kulturen Basel) in Basel houses around 300,000 objects and historical photographs, making it the largest ethnological museum in Switzerland and one of the largest in Europe. The collection includes objects from Europe, ancient Egypt, Africa, Asia, pre-Columbian America and Oceania. It was inaugurated in 1917 as a conventional ethnological museum and went from having a focus on the transmission of foreign cultures to focusing on intercultural dialogue, which was why in 1996 it became known as the Museum of Cultures.
