
The MASP is a private non-profit museum founded by the Brazilian businessman Assis Chateaubriand in 1947, making it the first modern museum in the country. Chateaubriand invited Italian critic and marketer Pietro Maria Bardi to direct MASP, a position he held for about 45 years. MASP's first works of art were selected by Bardi and acquired by donations from the local society, forming the most important collection of European art in the Southern Hemisphere.
