In the year 2000 the artist Fernando Botero donated to the Banco de la Republica an art collection of 208 works, 123 of his own authorship and 85 of international artists. With this collection el Museo Botero was founded, located at La Candelaria neighborhood, historic center of Bogota, in a colonial mansion that operated until 1955 as the archbishopric of the city, and was restored and adapted as a museum by the Banco de la Republica.
