The idea for the creation of the museum dates back to 1986, when the then mayor of Paris, Jacques Chirac, made available the Hôtel de Saint-Aignan (1650) for the creation of a museum of the Jewish civilization. The interior was first renovated in 1993 with the initial collection of the Strauss-Rothschild, collected by Isaac Strauss and donated by Baroness Nathaniel de Rothschild in 1890 to the Cluny Museum, in addition to the funds collected since 1948 by the then called Museum of Jewish Art in France.
