Yoshua Okón "Power"

The Centro Cultural Matucana 100 presents the monographic exhibition "Power" by Mexican artist Yoshua Okón (Mexico City, 1970), consisting of video installation, photography, photo installation, installation, and sculpture. As the title of the exhibition suggests, the connecting thread between the various works is the manner in which the idea of power is showcased through a contemporary, critical, and satirical lens. Particularly interested in the consequences of the rise of right-wing governments in present-day Latin America, "Power" includes works that touch on the neoliberal economic system, ethnic and racial conflicts, neofascism, and consumerism. Emblematic works like Freedom Fries (the photograph of an obese nude figure lying on a table at a McDonalds restaurant) and other more recent pieces like Chille (the recreation of a large scale replica of Augusto Pinochet's funeral that Okón found in a neo-Nazi bar in Chile), are part of a group that attempt to sketch and entire artistic career. Some of the most important solo shows by Okón are: "Yoshua Okón: Collateral," MUAC (Mexico City) and Museo Amparo (Puebla, Mexico), "Yoshua Okón: In the Land of Ownership," ASAKUSA (Tokio); "Saló Island," University of California at Irvine" (California, US); "Piovra," Kaufmann Repetto (Milan, Italy); "Poulpe," Mor Charpentier (Paris); "Octopus," Cornerhouse (Manchester, UK) an Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, US); and "SUBTITLE," Kunsthalle (Munich, Germany).
