Sumando ausencias, "Adding Absences" Doris Salcedo

Sumando ausencias "Adding Absences" emerges as a peace initiative to actively take a stand in favor of peace and to remember the victims of the armed conflict in Colombia during a period of more than half a century. The action began with a call that opened on October 6 in which Doris Salcedo and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia invited the people of Bogota (students, artists and victims of the conflict, among others) to meet at the Museo de Arte of that academic institution, the León de Greiff Auditorium, the Cloister of San Agustín, and the Polideportivo [Sports Center]. Taking five days to complete, the action involved writing—with weak strokes made with ash—the names of more than 2,000 persons disappeared or murdered, each name covering 2.5 meters. Ending on October 11, with the installation and collective embroidery that covered Bolívar Square with seven kilometers of fabric, the action not only was successful in achieving its initial goal but also allowed the interaction between communities from different parts of Colombia who camped out in the Square to peacefully demonstrate in favor of a speedy resolution for peace. The gathering also brought surprises like the one involving Edilma López, who, as she walked through the Square on her way to buy a candle in the city center, saw the name of her disappeared son written on the fabric that covered the floor and decided to be part of the symbolic act.
