New Display, Art Collection

Within the context of a project to renovate its collection, the Banco de la República de Colombia presents five different curatorships.

The new proposal approaches the history of Colombian art and confronts it with works by Latin American and International Artists, as it alternates works from various historic periods with the objective of establishing several thematic and aesthetic connections.

One of the most prominent aspects of this new display is the increment in the number of artworks presented—from 300 to more than 800 works on display—by 250 artists in a survey that expands from the Fifteenth Century to the first decade of the Twenty-First Century, in mediums like painting, sculpture, photography and installations, among others.

According to Ángela Pérez-Mejía, Cultural Deputy Director of the Art Unit of the Banco de la República, "It is a new chronological display that is not linear. In other words, the curatorships establish certain mathematic and technical counterpoints charged with political or social contexts that elicit in viewers different possibilities and interpretations. It is also a dialogue between different voices: on the one hand, those by the curators, each with his/her own interests and particular ways of understanding art and, on the other, those by the Art Unit team at the Banco de la República who, not only participated by providing content but were also involved in the production of the event."

The five curatorships are as follows: The First Modern Times, from the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth Centuries, curated by Jaime Borja; Ruptures and Continuities, Nineteenth Century, curated by Beatríz Gonzáles; The Avant-Garde Renovation, 1910–1950, curated by Álvaro Medina; Classic Experimental and Radicals, 1950–1980, curated by Carmen María Jaramillo and Silvia Suárez. Curated by Carolina Ponce de León and Santiago Rueda, the fifth curatorship covers the artistic production from the 1980s to the first years of the Twenty-First Century. This fifth exhibition will open during the last months of 2013 at the Casa República of the Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango.

This is the first time that the Banco de la República exhibits three art collections together: the Colombian one, the Latin American and the international. The museum offers guided visits on Mondays and Saturdays.
