New Director for Musée du Louvre is Appointed

Jean-Luc Martinez, previously the director of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities at the Musée du Louvre (Paris), will be the institution's new Director.

Martinez, 49, has been a member of the École Française d'Athenes and is an expert in Greek sculpture. He has worked for a decade in the study and public display of the French museum's collections of Greek sculptures and Antiquity reproductions. He is fluent in Latin, classical and modern Greek, English, Spanish, Italian, and German, and first joined the Louvre in 1997.

Among other tasks, Martinez was in charge of the renovation of the museum's Greek Art galleries, set around the Venus of Milo, one of the Louvre's signal holdings. The renovated galleries opened in 2010.

Martinez is the author of many works in his field of specialization and has curated exhibitions both in France and abroad, among them last year's show at Rome's Borghese gallery about the relationship between the Borghese family and classical antiquity.

He is currently participating in the preparation of "The Etruscan World", which will be presented at the Louvre-Lens and in Rome between December, 2013 and June, 2014.

Jean-Luc Martinez takes the post from Henri Loyrette, director of the Musée du Louvre for the past 12 years, who will step down on April 14th, 2013.
