Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney Set to Reopen

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney (MCA) is scheduled to reopen on March 29, 2012. The Museum is the only center in Australia dedicated to the conservation, collection, and exhibition of contemporary art. The Museum will reopen after spending 53 million AUD in the transformation and development of a "larger, stronger, and more modern" museum, with the objective of turning it into a great cultural center for contemporary art and creative learning. The MCA Director, Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, announced the cultural events that will follow the reopening of the Museum. From March 31 to June 3 of 2012, the Museum will present the exhibition Marking Time. It will include works by 11 international artists that will be presented in the new spacious galleries located in the MCA's top floors. The exhibition is organized by MCA Senior Curator, Rachel Kent, and will center on the manners in which artists visualize time and its passing across different media, including drawing, watercolor, sculpture, installation, sound, and light. Additionally, the Museum will present Collection Volume 1, an exhibition curated by Glenn Barkley that includes works by over 150 Australian artists created during the past 20 years. Additionally, works by artists Brook Andrew, Hany Armanious, Emily Floyd, Grant Stevens, and Helen Eager will be presented in several areas of the MCA concurrently with the two inaugural exhibitions. The various architectural interventions included the creation of a new terrace; a privilege vantage point in the MCA that will allow visitors uninterrupted views of iconic sites and architectural landmarks in the city of Sydney.
