Marie-Jose Nadal

Marie-Jose Nadal was born April 22nd 1931 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In 1944 she was one of the first artists of the "Centre d¿art", at only 13 years of age. She went to France in 1948 to study in Bafflement (close to Paris). After she continued her studies in Montreal, Canada. In 1950, she continued her studies in Ottawa, Canada with Robert Hyndman and Henry Masson. After an 8 year long pause, Marie-Jose Nadal started working in 1959 with Michele Manuel, Tamara Bussan and André G. Naude. Ten years later, she learned Ceramics at Poto-Mitan. She realized a lot of different metal sculptures at the atelier of Raymond Menos. In 1975, she opened a small gallery in Haiti to promote and exhibit modern Haitian art. She closed that gallery in 1977 to open another gallery with her daughter Michele Frisch in Petion-Ville, Haiti. From 1944 until1984, Marie-Jose Nadal had several exhibitions in Haiti, in the United States, in Canada, in Brazil, in the Dominican Republic, in France , Martinique, and Guadeloupe and in Puerto Rico. In 1965, Marie-Jose Nadal received the second price of the Esso Salon with "L¿oiseau Noir" (Black Bird), another one of her paintings was chosen to be part of the Rennes museum in France. Her piece of art"L¿Ancetre" is in the Haitian museum of art. She published the book "Peinture Haitienne" (Haitian Art" ) 1986 in Paris, with the Collaboration of Gerald Bloucourt.
