Lygia Pape

The Museo Reina Sofía inaugurated the first grand monographic exhibition in Europe dedicated to Brazilian artist Lygia Pape (Nova Friburgo, 1927 - Rio de Janeiro, 2004). The purpose of the show is to contribute to the understanding, study, and promotion of Pape's work. The exhibition will remain open to the public until October 3. It presents 250 works, including paintings, reliefs, xilographies, performance actions -shown through objects, videos, and photographs- film productions, movie posters, poems, collages, and documents. Some of the works shown include one of Pape¿s most famous works entitled Tecelares y Livros (Weavers and Books), along with some lesser known works, such as the Ballets Neoconcretos (Neo-Concrete Ballets). Especially noteworthy are the experimental films included in the exhibition, as these are shown together for the first time. Likewise, the show includes collectively experienced works that have survived through visual records and, as the center of the exhibition: the Teias (Webs), impressive installations created with silver, gold, or transparent filaments that envelop viewers in a space dominated by light and poetic abstraction. Lygia Pape is regarded as one of the most important Brazilian artists because of the degree of experimentation she achieved in her artistic production and for the constant evolution of her work throughout her career.
