The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires presents Grete Stern. The Dreams 1948-1951, an exhibition that includes the complete collection of 46 vintage photomontages from the series Sueños (Dreams), published by Grete Stern between 1948 and 1951, under the section Psychoanalysis Will Help You of the Idilio periodical (published by Editorial Abril). The works are an essential part of Argentina's photographic vanguard. The exhibition will remain open until April 25. The pieces exhibited come from the private collection of Eduardo F. Costantini, and they are one of the five sets signed by the artist that exist in the world. These photomontages emerged from the analysis of dreams that the very female lectors would send to the editorial department. They were then interpreted by psychologist Gino Germani -who would sign his notes with the pseudonym Richard Rest- director of Idilio. The collaboration lasted approximately three years and close to 150 works were published. During the first year, Grete Stern (Wuppertal, 1904, Buenos Aires, 1999) photographed almost all the photomontages before submitting them. She eventually abandoned that routine almost completely. This is the reason why today only 46 negatives exist. The series was presented for the first time at the Psychology Department of the Universidad de La Plata, during the mid-1950s. The first exhibition of the works in Buenos Aires took place in 1967, in collaboration with poet Elva Lózaga. In 1982, they were exhibited at the FotoFest grand exhibition, in Houston. Since then, the series' prestige has grown rapidly and become the object of numerous exhibitions; some national and others, for instance, at the IVAM in Valencia (1995), in France and Spain again (1996), in Portugal and The Netherlands (1997), in Germany (1998-1999). Today, this series of dreams is recognized for its original and true dimension.
