From Here to Lima. Peruvian Contemporary Photography

Organized in collaboration with the Fundación Perú España and the Embassy of Peru in Spain, the exhibition entitled From Here to Lima. Peruvian Contemporary Photography showcases the work of four photography collectives whose gaze focuses on contemporary Peru through more than fifty images. These works by Peruvian authors centers on the social diversity in Lima as capital of Peru and addresses traditional themes set in contrast to modernity, as well as the ethnic diversity of the capital's inhabitants, most of whom are migrants of Andean, Amazonian, African, Japanese, Chinese, Jewish and Muslim origin. The photographs are complemented with writings extracted from Peruvian literature, including quotes by Garcilaso de la Vega, César Vallejo, Ciro Alegría, Ricardo Palma, José María Arguedas, Blanca Varela, Oswaldo Reynoso, Mario Vargas-Llosa, Fernando Iwasaki and Jorge Eduardo Benavides. Among the collectives exhibiting their work are the ones formed by photographers Jaime Travezán and Morgana Vargas-Llosa, along with artistic director David Tortora, who participates with the photographic series Look at Me, Lima. The Supayfotos collective exhibits two image series that merge prose with realism and street slang and that also address the distance between mankind and nature. The Versus Photo collective presents a video installation entitled Vacío (Void) in which dozens of passersby are photographed in the main street of Lima's historic downtown. Lastly, the MR collective presents the series Poussin in Peru that sheds light on the manner in which violence affects nature. The exhibition will remain open until July 6, 2014.
