First Latin American Video Art Festival

On March 30, the Centro Cultural Borges will present the First Latin American Video Art Festival (FLAVIA) organized by the Visual Arts Department of the Centro Cultural Borges and sponsored by the INCAA (National Institute of Cinematography and Visual Arts). FLAVIA 2012 is a project conceived to support, encourage, and promote emerging video art manifestations, with the idea of raising public awareness about the impact of new technologies in society. The event will take place from 10:30 am to 8:00 pm-the time when the awards will be announced. After having watched the screenings alongside the general public, the jury will work in situ to choose the winners. The Festival will be divided in three sections: a competing exhibition, a non-competing exhibition, and a round table. Competing exhibition: Integrated by Blanca María Monzón, Alejandra Portela, and Kekena Corvalán, the organizing committee of the 1st FLAVIA, invited Latin American artists of any age to participate in the festival. A total of 135 Latin American video art works were entered in the competition. The artist selected will be part of a Competition Program divided in two screening segments to be shown on March 30. The awards offered in this first edition of the Festival are as follows: First Prize, 15,000.00 ARS; Second Prize,10,000.00 ARS; and Third Prize, 8,000.00 ARS. Non-Competing exhibition: This segment of the event is programed in two sections. The projection of video art works by artists who were specially invited because of the quality of their work and artistic trajectory within this discipline and in the realm of experimental filmmaking. Some of the artists participating in this section include: Carolina Andreetti, Marta Ares, Ernesto Baca, Tania Candiani, Cristina Coll, Oscar Cueto, Estanislao Florido, Sara Fried, AnaGallardo, Gustavo Galuppo, Narcisa Hirsch, Claudia Joskowicz, Silvana Lacarra, Marcos Luczow, Ester Nazarián, Leticia el Halli-Obeid, Paulo Pecora, Teresa Puppo, Silvia Rivas, and Graciela Taquini, among others. Noteworthy of mention is the special participation of the project entitled La Copia Infiel (The Inexact Copy), a compilation of video art programed by artists Carolina Andreetti and Toia Bonino. This proposal utilizes the power of the digital format and the easiness with which it can be copied, as a means to facilitate access to contemporary production. The Festival will also organize a round table to discuss the relationship between cinema and video art. With the title of Cinema and Video Art. Frontiers and Passages, the event will include the participation of Ernesto Baca, Leticia El Halli Obeid, and Andrés di Tella. More information: www.ccborges.org.ar
