The Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture created in 1999 announced Fabian Marcaccio as the recipient for its fourth prize for 2011. The prize consists of 15,000 Euros granted by an independent jury composed of Udo Kittelmann, director of the Berlin National Gallery; Prof. Dr. Raimund Stecker, director of the Wihelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg and Dr. Anda Rottenberg, independent curator and former director of the National Gallery Zacheta for Contemporary Art in Warsaw. They haveunanimously voted in favor of the Argentinian born artist in appreciation for a sculptural oeuvre with intrinsic significance, which isnot suitably represented* in Germany, independent from the art market trends and also contributes to the perception of sculpture as an artform. Fabian Marcaccio was born in 1963 in the city of Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina and has lived and worked in New York for over 20 years. He has continuously examined the classical concepts of painting, creating his paintants which combine concepts of painting, sculpture and object art. The prize jury has highlighted the paintants` sculptural quality and Marcaccio¿s new series, which addresses critical issues such as globalization, the banking crisis, trans-sexuality, gender engineering, terrorism and the role of media. On this occasion an exhibition of Marcaccio's works will be on view at the Georg-Kolbe-Museum (September 11-November 29, 2011). The award ceremony will take place on September 10, 2011 at Berlin Academy of Arts at ParisierPlatz. For more information contact:

*The unanimous decision for Fabián Marcaccio has been influenced, as have the jury decisions in previous years, by the aspect of discovering an artist of distinction, not suitably represented in Germany.(From the original press release sent by the Institution.)
