Escalonado, John Castles

On October 24, the steps of the Museo de Arte del Banco de la República were intervened with the mounting of the installation/sculpture titled Escalonado (Stepped) by Colombian artist John Castles.

Escalonado is a sculpture of imposing dimensions and materials. Made with iron and weighing nearly one ton, it measures more than four meters long by nearly two meters high. Nonetheless, at first glance it appears fragile and malleable. It consists of a slanted structure supported directly by the stairs of the small square that lead to the Museo de Arte del Banco de la República. As it is the case with most of John Castles's works, this piece is a perfect geometric study that establishes a friendly dialog with the landscape and the architectural spaces that surround it.

About John Castles:
In 1974, at the age of 28 and when he was still an architecture student at the Universidad Nacional de Medellin, John Castles (born in 1946) was awarded the Sculpture Award at the 15th National Visual Arts Salon, a recognition that marked the beginning of his artistic trajectory and paved the way for his sculptural and abstract work.
