Eduardo Plá

Argentinean artist Eduardo Plá died last December at the age of 60. Plá was a pioneer in the creation of videoclips, the use of videographs and 3D animation. The artist recently celebrated 40 years of artistic career with the publication of the book entitled Plá. 40 Años en el Arte (Plá. 40 Years in Art), a 250-page book that includes some of his best works.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1952, Plá studied—first in Argentina, between 1970 and 1974, and later on in Europe—architecture, audiovisual communication, design, and city planning. In 1984 he was appointed artistic director at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Milano, Italy. For more than 20 years he lived in several cities in Europe and the United States. He returned to Argentina in 1996.

He began his career in the world of experimental filmmaking and was the forerunner in the use of electronic-digital mediums. His work includes filmmaking, theatre and digital art. He will always be remembered for his compelling spherical installations and digital experimentation that led him to be ahead of his time in the use of new technologies applied to art.

During his artistic career Plá developed his version of popular icons like Carlos Gardel, Eva Perón, Diego Armando Maradona, Jorge Luis Borges, Ernesto Che Guevara, Isabel Sarli and Charly García. Between 2000 and 2005, the exhibition of those digital mosaics travelled to New York, Genève, Shanghai, Barcelona, Rome, and Buenos Aires.

Standing out amongst the many exhibitions that Eduardo Plá presented around the world are the 3rd Beijing International Art Biennale in 2008; the 3rd Mercosul Biennial in 2001; Los Paralelos del Mundo in 2007; Punta del Este and Art Tour Peninsular in 2006, a year that also included exhibitions in Bomarzo and Lisbon.

Concurrently with Argentina's Bicentennial celebrations, Eduardo Plá developed four light sculptures in Puerto Madero as he gracefully and masterfully played with capsules of Nespresso coffee to recreate a town hall with impressive reds and yellows that was exhibited during the Gallery Nights by the entrance of the Hotel Sofitel.

To honor Eduardo Plá, a great number of his works will be exhibited at the lobby of the Hilton Hotel in Buenos Aires until March 15.
