Seven descendants of art collector Peggy Guggenheim have filed a lawsuit against the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation for allegedly violating the conditions of the bequest of the legendary US collector who left her art collection and Venetian palace to the New York-based Foundation. The descendants are seeking to revoke the bequest by alleging that the Foundation has failed to comply with the stipulations established by Ms. Guggenheim. After her death in 1979, her residence overlooking the Grand Canal of Venice—the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni—and her collection of cubist, abstract and surrealist art, were donated to the foundation so the place could be used as a museum. According to the plaintiffs, the Foundation has failed to follow her request that her collection remain unmoved in her home and that any other works can only be part of temporary exhibitions shown at an adjacent palace. The plaintiffs had already sued the Foundation in the 1990s with a similar claim. That lawsuit was resolved in 1996 when the Foundation agreed to keep the family informed about any future exhibitions, events and any other major decisions. But in 2012, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection accepted a gift of 83 post-war and contemporary artworks donated by German collectors Rudolph and Hannelore Schulhof, which included pieces by Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Franz Kline, Cy Twombly, Anselm Kiefer and Andy Warhol, among others. The hearing that will review the claim presented by the heirs of art collector Peggy Guggenheim will be held on May 21 in Paris, France.
