Afro-Peru

On Wednesday April 30, the Virgilio Barco Library inaugurated the exhibition Afro-Peru by Kike Arnal (Venezuelan documentary filmmaker). The exhibition consists of a series of 25 black and white portraits painted exactly a year ago with the purpose of highlighting and drawing attention to the needs and potential of the Afro-Peruvian population, as well as its contributions to the Peruvian culture. Curated by Manuel Munive, the exhibition was sponsored by the World Bank and the Ministry of Culture of Peru. The images in the Afro-Peru convey the experiences, daily life, trades, expectations and desires of men and women who are part of the black population in Peru; whose eyes reflect both a yearning for a country free of discrimination and some of the stories that unfold in their communities. The exhibition aims at showcasing a recognition of diversity and the contribution by the Afro-Peruvian population to the country's imaginary, based on a reflection on themes such as memory, justice, rights, wealth and cultural heritage.
