The Murderer of Your Heritage is the latest installation created especially for the 54th Venice Biennale by artist Adrián Villar Rojas, who received the Benesse Prize for emerging artists during the inauguration of the Biennale. It is a site-specific installation that consists of monumental sculptures based on the multiverse theory-a.k.a. parallel universes theory-that proposes the coexistence of several universes. Thus, the large clay figures spread across the entire space of the Artiglierie can be viewed as simultaneous apparitions of these other alternative worlds, as the sculptures showcase the other paths mankind could have taken during the evolution of our history. The Prize was granted by a jury that included Hervé Chandès (General Director at the Fondation Cartier pour l'Art Contemporain), Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (Artistic Director at Documenta 13), Lu Jie (Director and Curator at Long March Project), and Fram Kitagawa (General Director at Setouchi International Art Festival). In his artistic proposals Villar-Rojas combines experimentation with the construction of narratives that allow him to convey certain meanings. His most recent pieces stem from a history that examines an imaginative political dimension. Adrián Villar-Rojas (Rosario, 1980) studied art at the Universidad de Rosario, in Argentina, and has exhibited his work in several international venues.
