Formed by painters Brian Nissen, Magali Lara and Manuel Marín, the jury of the 16" Bienal Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial announced the winners for this edition of the event. The award's ceremony will take place during the opening of the Biennial on 5 December at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Oaxaca. Selected from among 57 candidates, the artists that have been awarded are: Sofía Fernández-Díaz, for her work Harina (Flour, 2013), a 50.8 x 40.6 cm piece created with flour and oil on paper; Rafael Uriegas, for his work Sombra (Shadow, 2014), a 60 x 55 x 4 acrylic on canvas; and Miguel Ángel Vega-Magallón, for his work Golden Doll 1 (2014), an oil on canvas that measures 150 x 200 cm. The three pieces selected will become part of the collection of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Oaxaca and their authors will receive 150 thousand Mexican pesos each. Additionally, honorable mentions were given to Marco Arce for "Hesíodo (Teogonía 226-232) [Hesiod (Theogony 226-232, 2014)]; to Karen Dana, for Platitudes: Lugares Comunes (Platitudes: Common Places, 2013-2014); and to Yolanda Mora for Cascada (Waterfall, 2014). The Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial has been taking place since 1981 and was conceived by the Oaxaca-born painter Rufino Tamayo, with the aim of promoting national artistic creation as well as to enrich the pictorial heritage of his hometown.
