William Kentridge: Fortune

Until July 7, 2014, The Museo del Banco de la República, presents the traveling exhibition entitled William Kentridge: Fortune. This is the first monographic exhibition in South America centered on the work by the South African artist. The show consists of 31 sculptures, 32 drawings, 26 films and animations, 11 engravings and two video installations. The traveling exhibition presents pieces from the late 1980s to his latest works. Conceived in close collaboration with the artist, it was specially designed for this tour. It will then be presented at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellin. Curated by Lilian Toné, the exhibition arrives at the Museo de Arte del Banco de la República, in Bogotá, after stints at the Moreira Salles Institute, the Iberê Camargo Foundation, and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo. Visitors will be offered a close look at the explorations of technical and artistic disciplines by Kentridge that have resulted in a creative process that exists somewhere between transformation and movement. Everything is connected to the political and poetic realms that interact with the landscape and the social history of his native country. He adopts difficult topics, such as the legacy of apartheid and colonialism, as he also instills an undercurrent of humor and fantasy in works whose scope expands to universal themes of artistic representation, transience and memory. Kentridge adopts "fortune" as his guiding principle. He describes it as something different from the cold statistical randomness that, nonetheless, falls outside the range of rational control. This artist is mostly known for his animated films based on charcoal drawings. Other creations by Kentridge include engraving, collages, sculptures and stage presentations.
