Wallach Art Gallery at Columbia University presents Sin Autorización: Contemporary Cuban Art
Sin Autorización: Contemporary Cuban Art explores the political and intellectual context of the art scene in Cuba from 2016 to the present. Its title stems from El Decreto #349 signed by Miguel Díaz-Canel in 2018 that states that no artistic works can be produced without authorization within Cuban territory.
Since the end of Barack Obama's second mandate, communication was opened between the United States and Cuba, which led to an increase in tourism and a new interest in Cuban art. In this sense, unofficial exhibition spaces emerged, as well as the role of several artists as political agents and the interaction with foreign collectors. This period was locally referred to as "Obamism". However, the Trump presidency returned to strict regulations that brought new economic and social changes.
This exhibition curated by Gwen A. Unger arises as an academic exchange between Columbia University and Havana. The exhibited pieces showcase the potential of communication networks and cross-cultural dialogues, which account for forms, concepts, archival sources, documentations and actions that expose alternative narratives to Cuba's official discourse. The show presents the works of a group of artists who represent the complexity of cultural production in Cuba in recent years, and the multiple ways in which this context is explored.
