Voluspa Jarpa

The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires presents until October 3, 2016 a solo exhibition by Chilean artist Voluspa Jarpa. The exhibition includes photographs, paintings, sound devices, videos and installations. The project presents portraits of Latin American public figures that occupied posts in governments or in civil institutions and that were victims of political assassinations, some still unsolved. Under the curatorship of Agustín Rubio, the exhibition titled "In Our Small Region of over Here" reveals the contrast between two historic situations implicit in these biographies: the portrait (photogram) of the person, and the brutal record of the violent deaths (painting). Installation becomes a historic chronology and genealogy of the region. Likewise, the show synthesizes the relationship between public utopic discourses and the secret dystopic information about historic events contained in declassified documents. The images are accompanied by sound pieces with discourses by the portrayed personalities. Visitors will also find a multi-channel video shown on five screens with the piece titled Translation Lessons, a reflection on the idiomatic difficulties when trying to access the documentary material, mostly produced by English-speaking intelligence agencies. This work takes into account the ideological and symbolic dimensions that derive from the English language and its hegemonic condition.
