Vincenzo de Bellis, Director of Art Basel Fairs and Exhibition Platforms
Art Basel, in official communication, announced that Vincenzo de Bellis, currently Curator and Associate Director of Programs, Visual Arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, will take up the newly created position of Director, Fairs and Exhibition Platforms worldwide beginning in August.
Marc Spiegler, Director, Art Basel, will remain in his position heading all company departments, including those dealing with client relations and partnerships.
About the appointment, Marc Spiegler commented, "He brings us an experience of the art world that spans fairs, institutions, and unique events, along with a dynamic and innovative mindset that is well suited to a moment that forces us to consider new roles amid new realities constantly."
In his new role, de Bellis will oversee the leadership teams for Art Basel's four shows in Basel, Paris, Hong Kong, and Miami Beach, in addition to spearheading new events and initiatives in the physical realm related to the fair's programming. Reporting directly to Global Director Marc Spiegler, de Bellis will play an integral role in Art Basel's future development and expand its presence in new markets through activities complementary to the core business of organizing the world's leading art fairs.
De Bellis will bring Art Basel his previous experience on the art fair circuit. From 2012 to 2016, de Bellis was the artistic director of Miart, Milan International Fair of Modern and Contemporary Art. During his tenure, the fair grew from a regional showcase with 90 exhibitors to a truly international platform with 180 galleries, integrated within a vibrant citywide program of cultural events under the banner of Milan Art Week. From 2009 to 2016, De Bellis served as founding director and curator of the Peep-Hole Art Center in Milan. He curated the first two editions of Panorama, the traveling exhibition organized by Italics, a consortium of over sixty art galleries in Italy. De Bellis was also co-curator of the inaugural edition of Noor Riyadh.
