Brazilian artist Vik Muniz presented his most recent installation in Rio de Janeiro bay during the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development.
The 40 × 30 meters (131.23 × 98.42 feet) installation was fashioned from bottles, cans, jars, and several other waste objects. In order to fully appreciate its dimensions, it was necessary to build a 32.80-foot high platform for the visitors.
The installation was completed by anyone from the public who wished to contribute to its continuous construction. To support their efforts, Muniz put together a team to help these volunteers.
Under a process of deconceptualization of objects that are contemplated as garbage, Vik Muniz constructs an image that compels us to reflect and to evidence an ecologic message that is pertinent in the context of the reunion of more than 130 heads of state.
