Vik Muniz Opens Art School in Favela

In cooperation with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz opened an art school in the Vidigal favela, in Rio de Janeiro, with the objective of providing children of reading age the opportunity to learn art and technology through recreational activities. The school will use a teaching methodology that is the result of Muniz's collaboration with MIT in the US, with which he will seek to transform students from consumers into producers of art. The "Escola do Vidigal" will consist of two small front houses, located on the stairs that lead to the most contested space of the hill occupied by the favela. One of the houses will be used to accommodate volunteers and a multipurpose space. There will be a free area on the top. Although it will be located at the top of the Vidigal favela, the school will welcome students from all areas of the city. According to the artist, "the idea is that kids from the city can also participate and, through this coexistence develop a better integration."
