VideoZone V initiated and produced by the Center for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv ¿ is the Fifth International Video Art Biennial in Israel, held from November 23th ¿ 29th, 2010. 30 different programs of experimental films, video and digital art were screened during the event in the auditorium of the Center for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv and at Tel Aviv Cinematheque. The program comprised a unique selection by about 150 Israeli and international video artists. Video Zone events opened with an exhibition at the Israeli Center for Digital Art, Holon, titled Into the Eye of the Storm curated by Chen Tamir. This exhibition brought together video works that use the camera as a protagonist or that otherwise call to question the power the camera has on its environment and the subjects it records. The event also included an exhibition of video installations at the Herzeliya Museum of Contemporary Art. This time they showed selected works from the Centre Pompidou New Media Collection, curated by Christine Van Assche and Ghila Limon. The show concentrated around 2 main themes: The pioneers of video art and their exploration of television¿s impact on society and in the second part it focused on visions of the world. Among the artists presented were Nam June Paik, Valie Export, Bill Viola, Bruce Nauman, Michael Drucks, Robert Filliou, Samuel Beckett, Cristina Lucas, Ursula Bieman, Johan Grimonprez, Zineb Sedira, Ghazel and others. The CCA presented the exhibition Building Memory featuring recent works by Miroslaw Balka, Yael Bartana, Deimantas Narkevi¿ius and Marcel Odenbach. Besides, the CCA also presented 2 works by the acclaimed American artist Kara Walker and the Israeli artist Dor Guez relating to the same issue of ¿Memory¿ from another perspective. The opening event was a premier in Israel of Pipilotti Rist´s new film Pepperminta at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. Screening programs of the fifth Biennial were a combination of selections done by guest curators from different countries and regions in the world to assure we best present the video creation in these regions as well as subjects that are relevant to international video creation. Besides the screenings and the exhibitions, meetings, lectures, master classes and panels were conducted with some of the artists and curators attending. VideoZone V was accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue and a web-site documenting all the events and works presented.
