Víctor Vázquez

Víctor Vázquez has pioneered in the field of photography, which in other instances would be labeled as crossover. His photographs have been shown in Puerto Rico as in several other places of Europe and the Americas. He currently works and lives between Paris and Old San Juan. His studies, incorporating photography, psychology and compared religions, have led him to create a syncretism where he conceals Caribbean traditions, rituals of Santería and eroticism. It is a dual, hybrid and transvestite work, full of symbolisms and messages. The astonishing photograph titled Homage to Ana Mendieta, 2003 was selected for the Art Circle. This work is part of the exhibition ¿Liquids-Signs-Objects¿ presented at Seraphin Gallery in Philadelphia. Daniel Azoulay Gallery in Miami and Walter Otero Gallery in San Juan. Ana Mendieta (1948-1985) the dejected Cuban artist, died at age 37 after falling from the 34th floor, while with her husband, the minimalist sculptor Carl André, at their apartment in New York. Mendieta was a Pioneer of Body Art and Land Art. She created a series of symbols for her works that referenced life, nature and her own body, based upon Cuban Santería. In this photo, Vázquez uses a young female model, very much alike Mendieta. Vázquez dresses the young woman¿s body with glued papers he had previously drawn with emblems of Mendieta´s work of symbols. The black background highlights the figure and creates an impressive and dramatic staging.
