Venice threatened by Climate Change in an exhibition at San Lorenzo and Funded by TBA21

Venice’s Unesco World Heritage status as “a unique artistic achievement” is represented by buildings as the Byzantine church of San Lorenzo. Venice, one of the most illustrative examples of cultural heritage threatened by climate change, presents in San Lorenzo a newly restored space reopened after a two-year restoration as Ocean Space. Funded by TBA21- Academy, a limb of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary.
Across the San Lorenzo’s façade, a light installation indicates the predicted height the waters will reach by 2100 (6m above sea level); the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change argument portrays a city that will be underwater, losing with it centuries of history and the home of many.
Oceans in Transformation, an exhibition that opened in August, was born from a research project between the Territorial Agency (Founded by the architects Ann-Sofi Rönnskog and John Palmesino), scientists, marine biology institutions, and intergovernmental organizations carried out for three years. The exhibition investigates the transformation of the world oceans during the Anthropocene, assessing the latest scientific knowledge about the effects of a wide array of human-induced interferences on marine and coastal ecosystems. The project reiterates the critical role of the oceans concerning planetary survival.
During the current global circumstances, the city that was once flooded by tourism (25 million a year) is now a space that seems to recover the local fauna and flora, and starting to create consciousness on the need to find alternatives to protect the city and the locals. Markus Reymann, who co-founded TBA21-Academy with the collector Francesca von Habsburg, considers Venice “at the frontline of climate change in Europe... and has this incredibly intimate relationship to this very precarious environment. It made so much sense to bring Ocean Space here.”
