The Cultural Center of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announces the call for the Fifth Inter-American Biennial of Video Art, with the objective of stimulating the creative use of video and encouraging Latin-American and Caribbean artists to use their abilities to formulate original and creative proposals through the use of video technology ¿ and to broaden the discussion on issues that affect the social, cultural, and economic environment in the Latin-American and Caribbean regions. The Biennial with be held in December 2010 at the IDB Cultural Center Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. As in previous years, the Biennial will travel to several institutions associated with the circuit in several countries of the region. A catalog will be published in English, Spanish, and Italian and will include all of the participants' works, as well as the biographies of the selected artists. The exhibition will be presented during 2011 at the Istituto Italo-Latinoamericano in Rome, at the Santafé de Bogotá International Film Festival, at the Loop Festival in Barcelona, and at the Centro Eduardo León Jiménez in the Dominican Republic, among others, and will also be presented at organizations that belong to the international circuit (25) in several of the region's countries. First Prize will consist of US$4,000; Second Prize will be awarded US$3,000; a purse of US$2,000 will go to the Third Prize winner, and two Honorable Mentions consisting of US$1,000 each will also be awarded. The winning videos and those granted Honorable Mentions will automatically be included in the exhibition. The Washington, D.C. exhibition will include all of the videos selected, as these will also be part of ensuing exhibitions in countries belonging to the circuit. The competition is open to all artists who are citizens of Latin America and Caribbean IDB member countries, including Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela (more information available at www.iadb.org). The videos must be longer than one minute and cannot exceed five minutes. The videos cannot have been produced before January 2009.
