US$93,000 for Warhol work painted in urine

An Andy Warhol canvas painted with urine was sold for over US$93,000 in an online auction that also included photographs of famous revelers at the New York club Studio 54, shot by the father of Pop Art.

The work was auctioned for US$75,000 to a collector that paid more than US$93,000 after adding taxes and commissions, according to Christie's. This internet auction is part of an initiative driven last year by the Andy Warhol Foundation in tandem with Christie's, in order to progressively sell nearly 20,000 works by the artist and raise fund for the promotion of the arts.

Another work highly valued by the admirers of the father of Pop Art was a silkscreen based on the courtesy drinks ticket for VIPs, sold in US$40,000, below the up to US$70,000 forecast by Christie's.

The auction failed to arouse great enthusiasm among collectors, and many highlighted works were left unsold. The auction coincided with the 36th anniversary of the opening of Studio 54.

In recent months, many Warhol works have been auctioned in New York City, first on November 12th, where a total of US$17 million were raised, and then on March 5th, for US$2.3 million.
