The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will close its doors from June 15 to October 21 to revamp its galleries, changing the discourse of the exhibitions and, in this manner, rethinking the way in which the history of modern and contemporary art is presented. The renovations will include an expansion of more than 40,000 square feet that will allow the museum to explore works by women, Latinos, Asians, Afro-American, and other artists. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in collaboration with Gensler, the revamp will also take over the space of the old American Folk Art Museum. Existing galleries will also be expanded to the west through the 50W53 high-rise designed by Jean Nouvel. The museum will reopen with an exhibition about Latin American art entitled "Sur Moderno: Journeys of Abstraction—The Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Gift," in addition to two exhibitions by Afro-American artists titled "Pope.L, 1978–2001" and "Betye Saar: The Legends of Black Girl's Window."
