A Grain of RiceExhibition and Competition

The exhibition entitled A Grain of Rice is an invitation to rediscover the universe through works of small dimensions.

According to Japanese culture, each grain of rice contains 88 deities. This popular saying refers to the 88 process rice must undergo before being consumed. It is a symbolic number that represents the enormous effort involved in cultivating that food throughout the history of humanity.

In this era dominated by consumerism, it is inconceivable to think of a grain of rice as a universe. It is the artist job to reveal the mysteries and links that exist between the whole and its parts and to demonstrate that the size of a work of art has nothing to do with its evocative powers. Thus, a work of art is also a microcosm.

The call is open to artists from anywhere in the world, of any age and gender. They must submit works create in a single format whose measurements are 22 × 16 cm, vertical or horizontal. Each candidate may participate with up to three works. Artists are free to set the price of their works and agree that a 30 percent commission will be deducted from the final sale. The media used for the works can be drawing, ink, watercolor, collage, engraving, photography, painting or mixed-media.

The name of the winners in each category will be announced during the event's closing ceremony. The gallery will award an acquisition prize of 1,000.00 euros or the artist may opt instead to have his/her work exhibited in the gallery for one week.

The public will also be able to participate with their vote for the duration of the event. The five artists with the more votes will participate in a group exhibition.

The deadline to enter all applications in June 1 of 2013. All the rules for participation are available at: http://unseulgrainderiz.fr/en/conditions-of-participation.html
