The Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA) will present My Private World from August 22 to November 10, 2025. This is the first institutional exhibition of Uruguayan artist Ulises Beisso outside his home country.
Beisso (Montevideo, 1958–1996) had a prolific yet brief artistic career, creating over three hundred works. His practice, rooted in figuration, explored themes such as identity, sexual dissidence, and diversity within the cultural context of the Río de la Plata region during the 1980s and early 1990s.
The exhibition highlights two key periods of his work. One focuses on the so-called Dorian Rituals—mythologically inspired and visually rich creations. The other, titled Images of the (My) Hidden, reflects a darker phase from his final years, marked by illness and the discrimination he faced due to his sexual orientation.
The exhibition title comes from one of Beisso’s personal sketchbooks and also alludes to My Own Private Idaho (1991), the Gus Van Sant film that became a landmark of queer cinema and an important reference for the artist.
Curated by Martín Craciun, the exhibition is supported by the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art (ISLAA), which also co-publishes the accompanying catalogue.
