To commemorate the 104th anniversary of the birth of surrealist painter Leonora Carrington, La Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM) launched on April 5 a virtual tour of the Museo Casa-Estudio Leonora Carrington, located at 194 Chihuahua Street in Mexico City's Roma neighborhood.
The UAM acquired the property in 2017 for its architectural and museographic rehabilitation, which houses more than eight thousand objects by the painter, including 45 sculptures.
The 360 degrees virtual tour of the artist's home from 1948 until she died in 2011. It will be possible to see her artworks and testimonies, videos, interviews, photographs of Leonora and her husband, the Hungarian photographer Emérico Weisz.
"Today, I am very pleased to announce that this purpose has been fulfilled, and I thank Dr. Pablo Weisz Carrington for his generosity and interest in the UAM being the custodian of this important legacy for universal knowledge," said Dr. Eduardo Peñalosa Castro, general rector of the Casa.
"During her lifetime, I promised her that I would try to establish a museum that would celebrate her enormous and everlasting talent. UAM made it possible for this dream to be fulfilled and did an extraordinary job," said Dr. Pablo Weisz Carrington, son of the artist.
Joanna Moorhead, Leonora Carrington's cousin, expressed that this house was "her magic palace" and that (...) "She was a woman ahead of her time, especially in the subjects she dealt with, particularly ecology, feminism and the interconnection of everything. I think the opening of this museum is a very important moment for her legacy and for the way she will be received and known in the future".
Leonora Carrington was born on April 6, 1917, in Lancashire, England. In 1942 she arrived in Mexico, where she lived for the rest of her life. In this country, she developed her work as a surrealist painter and sculptor, becoming one of the most prominent women in the art scene. She died on May 25, 2011 (94 years old) in Mexico City.
