San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial: Latin America and the Caribbean

The San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial: Latin America and the Caribbean, an international cultural event sponsored by the government of Puerto Rico and organized by the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (ICP), has just announced through the Director of the ICP, Lilliana Ramos-Collado, and the Triennial's Chief Curator, Gerardo Mosquera, the central concept for the event, the participating entities and a preliminary list of the artists invited to participate. The biennial will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from October 24, 2015 to February 27, 2016. Created in 2004 as the continuation of the San Juan Biennial of Latin American and Caribbean Engraving—also conceived and organized by the ICP—each version proposes a unique curatorial theme that stimulates the combination of traditional printmaking and contemporary artistic practices that expand the concept of graphic art. According to Lilliana Ramos-Collado, "The 4th San Juan Poly/Graphic Triennial will become the emblem of the 60th anniversary of the ICP next year." The curatorial team of the Triennial is formed by: Gerardo Mosquera (Cuba), Curator-In-Chief, and by curators Alexia Tala (Chile), and Vanessa Hernández-García (Puerto Rico). The curatorial concept for this 4th edition of the event will center on the current ubiquitous nature of the image and the manner in which it has led to its multiple transformations. The 4th Triennial will explore the evolution of the graphic image across several fields, supports, habits and meanings, and particularly its expansion into the three-dimensional space. An expansive program of artist workshops is being planned, which will be taught by the visiting exhibitors, Puerto Rican artists and special guests. Also planned is the organization of an international colloquium on the subject of the contemporary image. A volume of the event will be published based on the lectures presented. An interactive online catalog of the exhibition will also be created to present all the information pertaining to the project. Some of the artists participating in the Triennial are: Rosenda Álvarez and the Grabadores por Grabadores project (Puerto Rico), Fernando Bryce (Peru), José Iraola (Cuba/Miami), Teresa Margolles (Mexico), Graciela Sacco (Argentina), Nicola López (US), Verónica Rivera-Rivera (Puerto Rico), Ricardo Lanzarini (Uruguay), Eugenio Dittborn (Chile), Mónica Nador (Brazil), Voluspa Jarpa (Chile), Rosangela Rennó (Brazil), Edra Soto (Puerto Rico), Rosenberg Sandoval (Colombia), Jesús Bubu Negrón (Puerto Rico) and Leandro Katz (Argentina), among others. Besides being presented in the exhibition rooms of the ICP, the Triennial will also be held in several art museums such as the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Puerto Rico, the Museo de San Juan, the Museo de Arte in Ponce and the Museo de Bayamón, among others.
