The Pan American Modernism: Avant-Garde Art in Latin America and the United States

Presented by the Lowe Art Museum explores, for the first time, the rich visual dialogue that exists between artworks produced by artists working in North, Central and South America during the modern and postmodern eras. Featuring the work of 50 Latin American artists and 21 artists from the United States, the exhibition establish a rich visual dialogue between the objects produced by artists working in 13 countries, during the 60 years between 1919 and 1979. Showcasing 75 important works of art, many of which are not currently on view or have not been previously exhibited, this exhibition includes paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and mixed media works that represent the Lowe's diverse, multi-cultural holdings.

Rather than perpetuating a US-centric hegemony, which tends to diminish works of art produced by Latin American artists, this exhibition analyze how Pan-American artistic exchanges processes – rather than stylistic transmission – construct a fuller understanding of modernism as an international phenomenon.

The Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami is held in conjunction with the exhibit, four important films and a lecture series. The film series July-October stops in four locations: Mexico, Chile, the United States, and Brazil. The series premieres with a trip to Mexico in THE VIOLIN the last July 18 and 20. CLANDESTINE CHILDHOOD travels south to Argentina on August 29 and 31. The September 12 and14 screening travels from Ecuador to the United States with CHOKING MAN. The series concludes on October 10 and 12 a special presentation of the classic film BLACK ORPHEUS.

The show has been organized by the Lowe Art Museum and curated by Dr. Nathan Timpano, Assistant Professor, Department of Art and Art History.

This exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Curator Dr. Nathan Timpano, Assistant Professor, Department of Art and Art History at the University of Miami, as well as Dr. Heather Diack, Assistant Professor, Department of Art and Art History at the University of Miami, and Dr. Edward Sullivan, Helen Gould Sheppard Professor, Professor of Art History at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
