The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville has announced that collector Maria Cox has gifted the institution fifty artworks by artists such as Philip Guston, Keith Haring, Jasper Johns, Joan Mitchell, and Frank Stella. Maria Cox had collected art with her late husband, Donald, since the 1970s. The couple had donated forty-eight works to the museum in 2004. After the recent gift, which has an estimated worth of $5.8 million, the Donald and Maria Cox Collection consists of ninety-eight artworks including fifty-two works on paper, twenty-seven sculptures, sixteen paintings, two pieces of ephemera, and one photograph. "Maria Cox's generous gift transforms MoCA's permanent collection," acting director Ben Thompson said. The donation adds pieces by sixty artists who were not previously represented in MoCA's holdings. He added, "These important works by top-tier artists bolster the strength of the permanent collection, dramatically increasing its significance, and will provide joy, education, and scholarship for generations." Maria Cox, a twelve-year trustee, is a retired interior designer. She had worked in New York, Boston, and San Francisco before she set up her own firm in New York City. Her projects include work on the Opera House and Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. She is an alumnus of Cornell University and a longtime trustee of the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University
