The AIRIE Nest

Since its opening in 2001, the organization Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) has received more than hundred and forty artists from all disciplines of creation. The program begins with an open call for participation in a competition. The artists selected will enjoy a month-long residency specially tailored for that purpose at the Everglades National Park. With the support of park rangers and other researchers, the artists-in-residence immerse themselves in the scientific aspects of the park, its natural history, cultural heritage, and any ongoing conservation efforts. This allows them to envision works with strong symbolic content and establish connections of various sorts with this ecosystem. With the financial support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, in April of 2017 AIRIE was able to convert a space at the Everglades National Park's Ernest F. Coe Visitors Center (40001 SR 9336, Homestead, FL, 33034). This space, known as "The AIRIE Nest," will serve as an alternative gallery in which to present interdisciplinary exhibitions. The venue was inaugurated with the exhibition titled "Blooming World," consisting of paintings by US artist Elisabeth Condon, an artist-in-residence during March of 2016, and curated by Deborah Mitchell, Executive Director of AIRIE. It is important to remember that the Everglades National Park is one of the largest reserves in the world for rare and endangered species. It has been named World Heritage Site, International Biosphere Reserve, a Wetland of International Importance, and a specially protected area under the Cartagena Treaty, due to its fragile ecosystem and the equilibrium of its river currents. For its part, AIRIE is the only program to involve artists with the Everglades. Its goal is to inform, connect, and support creators wishing to be inspired by its environments and become ambassadors of the park and its resources.
