Teresa Margolles

Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo will present an exhibition by Teresa Margolles. The Mexican-born artist explores the social and political context of her native country and the way it constrains the individual, delving into issues such as violence, social injustice, and all that drug trafficking engenders in Mexico.
The exhibition includes, among others, her La Promesa, which considers, in a poetic yet forceful vein, an unfulfilled promise of personal and collective happiness. The violence unleashed in Ciudad Juarez over the last decade has resulted in the abandonment of entire neighborhoods, areas that were created with single-family units that offered a happy life in the midst of a thriving community. In La Promesa, Margolles brings into view the ruins of a house and uses them to build a wall, an intense presence that, throughout the entire show, will be be blurred into nothingness.

The exhibition can be visited from February 18 through May, 2014.
