Teresa Burga’s exhibition at the MUSAC

The MUSAC (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castillo y León) presents “La equilibrista”, the first solo exhibition in Spain of the Peruvian artist Teresa Burga (Iquitos, Perú, 1935-Lima, Perú, 2021). The show reunites 100 oeuvres proposing a journey on Burga’s art production starting in the 60s and going through to the latest 2010s. The exhibition was commissioned by Helena López Camacho (MUSAC) and Janneke de Vries (Weserburg) and was co-produced with the MUSAC and the Weserburg, Museum für moderne Kunst.
Between the ’80s and the first decade of the XXI century, Teresa Burga’s relevance in Art History was invisibilized and left behind in the historical narrative. But in recent years has been recognized as a pioneer in the conceptual and pop art in Latin America. As Verónica Flom points out in an article published by ArtNexus in 2017: “Since the 1960s, Teresa Burga (1935) devoted herself to creating strongly conceptual art that involves non-traditional materials. By the decade's end, she was a feature of the Lima avant-garde art scene. In 1968 she won a Fulbright scholarship and traveled to the United States, to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. After Burga returned to Peru in 1971, her art was met mostly with incomprehension and remained out of sight for decades, safeguarded by the artist in her own home” (ArtNexus No.106).
The avant-garde art produced by Burga since the ’60s will be on view until May 28th, 2023 at the MUSAC, León, Spain.
