Susana Solano Receives the 2011 Tomás Francisco Prieto Award

On November 23, 2011, Spanish sculptor Susana Solano received from the Queen of Spain the 22nd Tomás Francisco Prieto Award. The ceremony took place at the Museo de la Casa de la Moneda in the city of Madrid. The Fundación Real Casa de la Moneda yearly presents the Award to recognize the personal and professional trajectory of Spanish and Latin American artists. Additionally, Solano received a purse of 22,600 euros along with a medal. Before Solano, the award had been given to artists Eduardo Chillida, Antoni Tàpies, Andreu Alfaro, Roberto Matta, Juan Barjola, Rafael Canogar, Antoni Clavé, Martín Chirino, José Hernández, Guillermo Pérez-Villalta, Eva Lootz, and Alfredo Alcain, among others. Solano began his artistic education at the Facultad de Bellas Artes in Barcelona, the city in which he was born in 1946. The formal structure of his sculptures is mostly determined by materials like iron and lead; assembled materials that Solano approaches as handcrafts. Solano previously received the 1998 National Fine Arts Prize in Spain, and the 1996 Arts Prize from the Confederación Española de Organizaciones Empresariales (CEOE, its Spanish acronym).
