Latin American art auctions. New York

This season, results for Latin American auctions were highly positive. Market trends indicate a growth of the Mexican sector, as well as the consolidation of Latin American art in the international marketplace with works of increasing importance entering collections in Europe and North America. At Sotheby¿s, results were even more remarkable, given that more classic Latin American pieces were presented, while at Christie¿s the focus remains on the market for Latin American artists who have crossed over into international regard. New records were set at Sotheby¿s for Raúl Valdivieso, Esteban Chatrand, works on paper by Remedios Varo, and also José Clemente Orozco, whose extraordinary painting ¿Prometeo¿ was sold on US$534,400 despite being banned from leaving Mexico. At Christie¿s, the new highs were six: Beatriz Milhazes, Kcho, Sergio Hernandez, Cildo Meireles, and among classic artists Pedro Coronel with ¿Femmes Papillons,¿ sold for US$125,100, and Lygia Clark, who fetched US$ 65,725 for her ¿Bicho.¿
