Solidaridad. Redes intelectuales: arte y política en América Latina

The exhibition Solidaridad, Redes intelectuales: arte y política en América Latina, which will be open to the public from April 3rd through April 30th at the Leopoldo Rother Architecture Museo of Universidad Nacional de Colombia, brings together a significant documentary selection for the study of three moments in the history of Latin American art. The first half of the Twentieth Century, based on the nodes formed by some of the era's most important cultural journals, including Martín Fierro and Universidad; the Cold War period, through the continent-wide networks built around the important figures of Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros (1896-1974) and Cuban critic and curator José Gómez Sicre (1916-1991); and the 1960s and 70s, through the complex and intricate cultural relationships established from Cuba and from Chile, and their profound impact on the region's intellectual and artistic life. This exhibition is one result of the research project Redes intelectuales: arte y política en América Latina 1920-1970, carried out by a group of 10 researchers from several countries. Coordinated by professor María Clara Bernal (Colombia), professors Ana Longoni (Argentina), Carla Macchiavello (Chile), Diana B. Wechsler (Argentina), Fernanda Nogueira (Brazil), Ivonne Pini (Uruguay - Colombia), José Antonio Navarrete (Cuba - USA), Jorge Ramírez (Colombia), Sylvia Juliana Suárez (Colombia), and William Alfonso López (Colombia), developed an intensive research agenda. With the support of Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Universidad de Los Andes, Universidad Nacional Tres de Febrero, the ArtNexus Foundation, and especially the Connecting Art Histories of the Getty Foundation, in the United States, this team of researchers immersed themselves in archives and documentation centers in several Latin American cities, and the partial results of their projects were presented in a series of conferences and seminars held during 2012 and 2013 in Bogotá, Los Angeles, and Buenos Aires. The plurality of points of view that come together in the exhibition is the fruit of a coordinated endeavor that emphasized the project's central assumption: the conviction that today, a full understanding of the continent's complex artistic processes involves a commitment with networked efforts.
